A Study on Platelet Indices ana Bone Marrow Megakaryocytes in Idiopathic Thromtocytopenic Purpura

Abstract
The Platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), Plateletcrit (Pct) and platelet
distribution width (PDW), and the number and morphology of bone marrow
megakaryocytes were studied in 24 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
(ITP) before and after treatment. The results were summarized as follows ;
1. In ITP, the number of megakaryocytes in the bone marrow was significantly higher
than normal (p<0.001).
2. There was a negative correlation between the number of megakaryocytes in the
bone marrow and the platelet count (r=0.65, t=2.39, p<0.05).
3. The magakaryocytes were shifted toward more immature forms in ITP.
4. The platelet count and Pct were markedly decreased (p<0.001) and the MPV &
PDW were significantly increased in ITP (p<0.05).
5. After treatment, the platelet count, Pct & PDW of 11 improved patients were
normalized while the PDW of 11 unimproved patients didn't show significant change.
The MPV remained high in 11 improved patients when the platelet count, Pct and
PDW were already normalized.
